About Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, solid needles into specific points on the body to help the body rebalance itself and overcome disease. Acupuncture originated in China over 2500 years ago, and is today practiced around the world.  Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy for treating a variety of medical conditions, including pain, gastrointestinal disorders, gynecological problems, allergies and asthma, insomnia, stress, depression and anxiety, menopausal symptoms, infertility, fatigue, sports injuries, colds and flus, and more.

During your first visit to Acupuncture Associates, you will have a consultation with the acupuncturist.  At this time, we will discuss your current concerns as well as other information that allows us to get a complete picture of your health from a Traditional Chinese Medical perspective.  Following the consultation, you will receive a full acupuncture treatment.

Subsequent visits will consist of a follow up assessment of your symptoms and a full acupuncture treatment. To receive maximum benefit from any acupuncture treatment, avoid vigorous exercise, eat a light snack, and do not drink any alcohol or coffee at least 2 hours prior to your visit. Following the treatment, you should avoid vigorous exercise for a few hours.

In addition to acupuncture, your treatments may also include other modalities of treatment from Traditional Chinese Medicine, including moxibustion, cupping, electroacupuncture, tui na (massage), gwa sha (scraping technique), magnet therapy, or auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture).  You may also be provided with diet and lifestyle advice consistent with Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutritional theories to augment the effects of your acupuncture treatments.

After your first visit, we will discuss your treatment plan, including the number and frequency of treatments needed for your particular condition. The frequency of acupuncture treatments depends on the severity of your diagnosis. Acupuncture is sometimes given daily or every other day in acute situations that require immediate pain management.  Typically, treatments are spaced about once per week.  A minimal course of treatment for recent ailments and injuries is generally 4-6 visits.  More severe and/or chronic conditions may require regular treatment over several months or longer.

Depending on the age of the patient and in response to a patient's request, special treatment sessions using magnets and a non-insertive acupuncture technique may be used in place of needles.  Call or e-mail to inquire about this option.
