Acupuncture and Arthritis

Many patients come to the acupuncture clinic seeking relief from arthritic pain – and whether it is osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gouty arthritis, or any other form of the condition, acupuncture can help!   As strange as it may sound, the mere insertion of acupuncture needles ANYWHERE in the body can help regulate the body’s immune response so that unnecessary inflammation can be controlled and minimized.

Additionally, acupuncture very effectively relieves PAIN associated with arthritis.  Acupuncture does this in four ways.  First, it causes the body to produce chemicals called endorphins (natural compounds similar to morphine), which inhibit the perception of pain.  Second, acupuncture works through the nervous system by blocking the transmission of pain signals from the spinal cord and peripheral nerves to the brain.  Third, acupuncture can “deactivate” trigger points – tender areas frequently found around arthritic joints that are often responsible for chronic pain.  Finally, acupuncture also has a very relaxing effect on the mind and body.  Since pain can often have a psychological component, this effect helps to promote relaxation and stimulate tissue healing.
