Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work to bring the body back to its optimum balance and ready for conception. This is accomplished by:
When we treat women for fertility related issues, we recomend weekly acupuncture sessions (+/- Chinese herbal medicine) throughout the menstrual cycle. This is because the menstrual cycle is such a dynamic process that requires different strategies for each stage - menstruation, follicular development, ovulation, and post-ovulation/pre-menstruation.
- Reducing stress
- Regulating the timing of the menstrual cycle
- Regulating body temperature throughout the menstrual cycle
- Normalizing hormones that regulate ovulation
- Increasing uterine blood flow (which improves the change of fertilized egg implantation)
- Relieving pain due to dysmenorrhea, fibroids, and endometriosis
- Improving overall body and mind health
For those who are undergoing ART, including IUI and IVF, we use acupuncture to help prepare for ART procedur
es and, more specifically, regulate hormones, increase ovarian function, reduce the side effects of hormone treatments, and increase blood flow to the uterine lining.
Additionally, in order to optimize the effects of acupuncture during an IVF cycle, we typically recommend both pre- and post-embryo transfer treatments. Data have shown that conception rates increased to 51% when acupuncture is administered in this manner, as compared to only 36% when embryo transfers are done without acupuncture.
Traditional Chinese medicine can also be used just as effectively to treat male fertility concerns, including low testosterone levels, reduced sperm count, poor sperm motility and morphology, or sexual dysfunction. This is done by balancing energy in the body, reducing stress, and improving male reproductive function.
